Lies to the west of the town and stretches deep into the mountains. Swimming and canoeing are allowed on the Palmiet River.

The 100 000ha reserve comprises natural vegetation, with more than 1600 species of unspoilt indigenous fynbos, the Micro frog and the rare march rose. It was the first UNESCO-declared Biosphere Reserve in South Africa.
